  REVIEW:

Trust the Man . . . more eye-opening than LASIK surgery!  Yes, as it turns out, the X-Files’ Agent Fox Mulder . . . apparently just an actor!

Trust the Man does star The X-Files famed lead actor, David Dechovny.  This movie is advertised to be a dark comedy.  Its story is definitely dark in nature, but unfortunately…it’s not at all funny.  The premise centers around the dysfunctional relationships of two couples.  Tom (David Duchovny) is married to a successful actress Rebecca (Julianne Moore).  Unfortunately, Tom is addicted to sex and has affairs because his wife isn’t meeting his needs.  Then there’s Elaine.  Elaine’s (Maggie Gyllenhaal) boyfriend is Rebecca’s brother who just so happens to be opposed to commitment.  So instead of marriage, they just date for years and years.  The whole story is about screwing up, breaking up, giving up and making up.  Since the subject is dark, it’s hard to root for these couples.  In fact, when the couples are together, the audience wonders why and when they are apart, the audience hopes they stay that way.

While we’re huge fans of David Duchovny, we didn’t like him in this movie.  And, while Julianne Moore is a remarkably talented actress, we didn’t like her in this movie either.  But, the real issue is that these independent, low-budget type films cannot afford, for instance, invading aliens or pillaging pirates.  So, they have to find something interesting, or artistic, or entertaining in the mundane.  Unfortunately, many of these movies end up being just that – mundane.  This is very much the case with Trust the Man.  It’s a tale of everyday life; and, sadly, it highlights life’s hopelessness rather than its hope, making it hopeless at the box office as well.

  MOVIE NIGHT TRAFFIC LIGHT:

On the Movie Night Traffic Light on a scale of GREEN meaning “Go – it’s a must see”, YELLOW meaning “Caution – it’s okay” and RED meaning “No - stop don’t do it."

We rate Trust the Man RED.  Stop – this one is not worth it.
